the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford: review/synopsis

what a nice long title for a film (based on a book), anyways, saw it at a different cinema last night, cinema nova in carlton. the film is about the american outlaw (from the 19th century) jesse james, and his killer, robert ford. the story starts with robert's first meeting (i guess) with the james brothers, just before a train robbery. it follows jesse james (brad pitt) through his last few years, his gang (the later, lesser one), including robert ford (casey affleck), and continues past his death. it's a long film, about two and a half hours, and at times (mainly the first two hours smiley), it does go on a bit. i know it's based on a book, but in the end it does try to tell two stories, one of jesse james, and one of robert ford, the ending seems a bit weird as it kind of zips through quickly.

a bit of acting, a lot of artsy film stuff, and cool costumes make up this film. it was pretty good, certainly they managed to squeeze in some funny parts (always a plus):

on top of that, there was the violence, the whole i'm gonna kill you when you least expect it drama (although they were always waiting for it), and some cool effects.

they had cool costumes, including top hats, cowboy hats, and big coats. it looked pretty cold in some of the scenes, so i guess apart from being costumes, they would've been useful too. the only negative i had, was robert ford's pimply teenager voice, maybe that's how it really was, it was a little annoying, i guess if that's what it was really like, you gotta play to the character.
