wet roads: take risks!!

1st-nov-2007 - posted by dtra

so i was riding home today, and it was raining in the first five minutes, then stopped, and just the roads were wet. this meant i was getting plenty of spray from my tyres, cars driving by, and puddles, etc. as if that wasn't enough, coming up to one of the climbs (possibly the slowest one going home), i was following this other guy on a road bike, but decided i didn't want to slow down (about 5% or so) and follow him, so i had a quick look over my shoulder and went past. a car went past giving plenty of room as i was next to the other cyclist, but as i was almost all the way round, this van clips (brushed) my shoulder.

i look up, and notice his side mirror is folded in (ie. pushed toward the back of the vehicle). i wasn't too pleased, but i kept on riding, and because on rainy/wet days, traffic is so much worse, i ended up going past the van (down the middle of the road). i had a brief look in his side mirror (the driver side one) as i rode past, and he says something that ended with "mate". typical aussie yobbo tradie, is there one that isn't a dickhead?

anyway, whether it was my fault for choosing to overtake in an unsafe manner/position, (remembering that it is legal for cyclists to ride two abreast in a lane), or whether the tradie was just a dickhead for driving too close in those conditions, the fact is, the driver was some kind of dickhead smiley. i did manage to get home several minutes (i'm guessing) before he went past, thanks to my greater maneuverability.

fortunately, i'm a cyclist, and i can do whatever i want smiley, i try to obey the road rules (the same as anyone else), it's extremely unlikely that i'm going to cause any major damage. i could just imagine that guy pulling a hit n run, after drinking a few too many, anyway, rant over. i attach a picture of my bike with some moisture, and also de-saturated, cos i'm so artsy smiley.

fuckn hell... i don't think it matters if you were riding in the second lane, if he hit you it's his fault... i woulda given him a mouthful when you caught up to him.
