new zealand 2007: day three - coronet peak, queenstown

28th-aug-2007 - posted by dtra

our first full day in queenstown, and we obviously decided to go snow boarding. we didn't realise we were meant to pick up the gear the night before, so we lost a bit of time going down to the shop to pick it up, but that wasn't much of an issue. it was alf's turn to drive, he was a little worried about getting up the mountain in a manual, but it wasn't really an issue, as he did it with no issue, it even snowed on the way back. we went to coronet peak as it was the closest, and easiest to get to. it was my first time at the snow (i went when i was little but only rode a sled very short distances), i didn't even have gloves.

i went and joined a lesson, and didn't really get it until the next day smiley. after falling over several times, and freezing my hands off, i realised my folly, and went and bought the cheapest gloves they had. that definitely helped, not my boarding skills, but at least when i fell over, it wasn't so bad. i fell over heaps, and wasn't really getting how to do stuff. then it started snowing, i fought through it, but didn't really improve over the course of the day. i basically hurt everything, my bum, my knees, and my wrists.

we finished off around 4pm, then headed back to town. my first day wasn't too successful, but i guess i was willing to keep going, especially since we had to use the snow gear in the five days that we had it for (this was totally bogus). it was pretty sucky that we couldn't use the gear on non-consecutive days, meaning after four or five days, we were gonna be real tired, and sore.

afterwards, we wandered around looking for a place to eat, and finally settled on finz, a place by the lake. it's sort of a seafood (fish and chips) kinda place, but they don't only do that kind of food. anyways, i had the fish and chips (possibly the last time i ever have battered fish and chips), which was ok (but as always, the batter probably spoils it), alf had the fish burger. we also got garlic bread as a starter, which was really good.

that was it for day three, we settled in, and waited for the next day, in which we decided to go to the remarkables.
