my favourite cartoon as a kid in the 80's, got a big screen makeover (cliche number one, yes!!), with 3d effects and everything. even though i'd seen the trailers, and pretty much didn't like the transformers that they started peddling in the early 90's (and how they evolved), i could go watch and hope. so without watching any transformers since the original 80's style versions, what was this going to be like? well, the cars and stuff all looked very cool, and polished. the transformers (as robots) didn't do it for me, they looked good, but didn't have that cartoonish look that i grew up watching (which prolly woulda looked crap in a live action situation). the special effects were pretty cool, it wasn't especially obvious that the robots weren't really there.
they had the characters that i remember, optimus prime, jazz, ironhide, bumblebee, and ratchet on the autobot side. megatron and starscream were the only decepticons that i recognised (although i didn't really remember their names anyway, apart from soundwave). but only optimus prime and starscream resembled their original characters. frenzy was a character (he was a cassette tape, earthquake generating little robot in the cartoon), he was a little spindly thing. as i said, the special effects were good (although why frenzy had blue eyes while all the other decepticons had red eyes was a little confusing), except that when the transformers were fighting, it was hard to tell who was who.
to the actual plot, it's about alien robot organisms coming to earth in pursuit of the "allspark" energon cube (again, different from the cartoon slightly). autobots are the good guys, and decepticons are the bad guys, everyone is in trouble when the decepticons finally discover where the allspark is, and try to claim it for themselves. sam, buys a new car which happens to be an autobot, and is inadvertently drawn into the fight, along with the us army, and a collection of other people. that's it for the plot, it's really quite silly, but they're transformers!!
the film was really very corny, from the computer hackers, and army, and relationships, etc. possibly spiderman corny, but at least this film had transformers (hehe, new cartoon supposedly in 2008, i might have a look at getting a hold of the classics for nostalgic reasons 
). sequels as well, are prolly going ahead, i don't think i'd pay to watch a sequel (maybe on dvd), so apart from megan fox, the people in the film were bordering on un-watchable.
