proper review: my player mode, nba 2k10

after having played 2k10 for the past two months, i think i can give a pretty thoughtful review of the game now. please keep in mind that i haven't played console games of any type for a long time (computer games either), i don't have anything to compare the game to. any way, i'm getting this out of the way right now, i can't say that i am very impressed by the game, right now, i'd give it a six (maybe even five) out of ten, and i'm going to list all my issues below, as well, i guess, what i did like, since i only played my player, i'm only going to review that section (i have patched it, but didn't start fresh, my player is a small forward), and maybe the slam dunk contest. first, what i liked about it:
- the game play is pretty good most of the time
- saving and uploading replays, nice feature
short list it seems, now for the dislikes (including a lot of bugs):
- player movement is extremely awkward, the player won't run half the time unless i sprint, otherwise he's in that defensive stance moving like a crab, or running (walking) in circles (especially bad in the dribbling drill)
- related to the above, on defence, when your man runs to the basket, you're fucked unless you're standing away from him, cos he turns so slowly
- too many goal tending and offensive interference calls (i saved a replay of a goal tending that is pretty obviously not)
- hold the ball too long penalties, they simply are unrealistic(especially when you are the best player on the team by a long way)
- a bug, sometimes when my player goes to inbound the ball after a basket, he starts running on the spot, and i get a five second violation
- another bug, the stupid stat screens that don't go away during play, so you can't see half (or more) of the screen
- my player doesn't catch alley oops since the patch came out
- the fact that i have to wait an extra five to ten seconds after being subbed off just to go to the simulation screen, all these extra stats and shit should be an option to turn off, i just want to play the game, i don't care about the game feeling like i'm watching an actual game, i just want to play, don't waste my time
- quarter length, i can now set the quarter length of my games, but the computer is still simulated to 12 minute quarters, so while seven minute quarters are good enough for me to be in the mvp race, it's pretty annoying that my player is handicapped by over forty percent of game time
- going to nba headlines or nba home page, simulates games automatically, i lost an nba championship because of this, i had just won the conference finals and wanted to see what happened in the eastern conference, so i went to headlines, next thing i know, a prompt comes up saying the nets of all teams had won the title
- actual game results different from what happened, i just lost a game to the nets in the regular season, then in the next game, the commentators started talking about how we beat them, i checked out the schedule it said we won, our win streak had increased, but our overall record increased by a loss, this happened a few times
- why doesn't the game analysis store a complete record of all games (it's limited to 20)?
- bad steal attempt, the player jumps the wrong way a lot of the time
- ridiculous trades and team lineups, i played against the houston rockets with a frontline of kevin love at small forward, greg oden at power forward, and yao at centre, also our coach, nate mcmillan, played ben wallace at shooting guard
- why does association mode have proper salaries and free agency, but not in my player mode? you only get one chance at the end of the season to decide if you want to go to a different team, you don't get to see who plays for the other teams, it just pops up asking if you want to change (to a random three or four teams) or stay
- stupid tasks like take at least 7 jump shots in the game, as a player you always try to take the highest percentage shot possible, if you can take ten dunks in a game, why would you take a jump shot?
that's a real long list of dislikes, and i could probably think of more if i thought longer about it (or played again), a lot of it probably stems from me not having played these kinds of games for a while (so maybe i'm expecting too much), but certainly the bugs, i wouldn't expect to exist, the game just seems to lack polish. i'm going to think about getting the nba live demo to see what the game play is like there, but it'd be unlikely that i'd buy that this season.
the picture is a screenshot of a replay i uploaded of my player dunking on dwight howard, like i said, cool feature.
