vaccinations

5th-sep-2008 - posted by dtra

went to the travel doctor today for some vaccinations, got two today, with a few more to come. first, i got the yellow fever shot, a requirement before entering brazil. the yellow fever one is done as long as i don't have any adverse reaction, ie. getting flu-like symptoms that could lead to yellow fever-like illness (which is deadly!!) smiley. then i got the first (funky pink stuff) of three shots needed for the rabies vaccination, i got the full (as in more expensive and more protection smiley) version. i wasn't going to get the rabies vaccination, but the book says stays of over three months are recommended, and i thought i can afford it, why take the risk? i have to get two more shots for it, one next week, and then one more three to four weeks after that. i'm not sure, but the rabies vaccine could also be a live vaccine like the yellow fever one, so hopefully i don't get rabies vaccine illness.

both shots were brief, but did hurt a bit when the nurse jabbed me (she didn't even count me down), normally i like to look at the injection, but she got me to turn slightly so she could do her job easier.

this stuff isn't cheap, but if i'm gonna be away for that long in places that aren't as clean as melbourne (probably), i should prepare myself as best i can. i'll probably end up buying some of the kits, medications they have to keep the bugs away, etc, again, pretty expensive, but it's easier to do it this way than to go and look for all this stuff. the expenses are starting to build, but i think i should be able to save a bit more before i leave.

pic taken from wikipedia (not the actual syringe used on me).
