cumberland river, near lorne - australia day weekend

29th-jan-2008 - posted by dtra

ozzy invited me and alf down to the cumberland river holiday park (where his parents had booked a site for the week) just past lorne (southwest of melbourne) for the australia day weekend. got me a tent, and we headed off down there on saturday, it's about three hours from melbourne, and takes in a bit of the great ocean road. we had red rooster for lunch in melbourne, before arriving at the camp site a bit after 4pm. we didn't do too much then, just found our site, and set up our tents. mine, being so small, was quite easy to set up and sort out (i'll post more on that).

alf and ozzy had a bit more work, but it wasn't particularly difficult. we just relaxed after that, and went to get some extra food for dinner. after dinner, we walked down to the local beach with our cameras. tried to take a long exposure of the cars driving past, but i ran out of batteries. we saw some glowing things in the water, which were cool (although we didn't know what they were).

the next day, we headed down to the local beach to take some photos, and have a look around. we went down to lorne for a swim (in the very cold water) and lunch at grandma shields pie shop, had a steak pie and a salami roll (yum). afterwards, we went on a hike up to the castle rock lookout (about 5km return, i don't know), it's a tough little hike up, with some nice steep points. got a nice view of the camp site from up there (and a failed panorama), before heading back (alf almost stepped on a little snake) down to the camp site.

we went to dinner at the lorne hotel, and watched the australian open final as well (i wanted federer to win, but then, tsonga, but djokovic deserved it). i had the seafood chicken which was really nice (i'd go for that again smiley), and had some asahi's on the side. after the disappointing result at the tennis, they turned the tv straight off, so we just left, played some cards, and called it a night.

our last day, the public holiday monday, consisted of a morning swim at the cumberland river beach (cold, choppy, rough, but not bad), it was pretty foamy, which may have made it feel a bit warmer. after that, we went for lunch at grandma shields again (steak and bacon, and pizza pie, yum), and had one last swim at the lorne beach (definitely colder than cumberland river). i didn't like it too much, the tide kept pulling me out, so after half an hour or so, i called it quits (i know my limits). unfortunately, when i re-applied my sunscreen i must've forgot to do my shoulders, cos i got burnt on both sides smiley. anyway, after that, we headed back to melbourne to get ready for work smiley.

it was a good weekend, good to get to the beach every now and again, good to go for a hike very now and then, and good to get away from the city every now and then smiley. didn't take as many photos as usual, but that's cool, i have a feeling that i'll take a few in mexico, and other destinations smiley. got a chance to try out my new tent, and my new backpack (not 100% sure, but definitely more comfortable than the lowepro), as well as my other lenses (more prime focused this time).
