no country for old men: review/synopsis

another week, another film it seems, this time it was either american gangster or no country for old men, we went for the latter because it had better seats available. starring tommy lee jones (as the sheriff), josh brolin (as the lucky/unlucky cowboy), and javier bardem (as the crazy, creepy, killer), it's a film based on a book (again), and set in 1980 texas. a man kills a police officer and an innocent bystander (with a crazy cattle gun), a drug deal gone wrong, a cowboy hunting, and two million dollars, start the film off.

the coyboy happens across a scene of dead mexicans, a lot of drugs, and ends up finding one more, dead, but with a suit case full of money. one of the dealers is still alive and asks for water, the cowboy doesn't have any, but returns later in the night with a bottle of water. by chance, more mexicans have come down to secure the money/drugs, and the cowboy is chased away.

this starts a game of cat and mouse, the sheriff after the crooks and the cowboy, the mexicans are after the money, and the people that were buying the drugs want their money back as well. they hire a crazy hitman to retrieve it, and with a transponder in the suitcase, the search is fast. the hitman kills anyone in his way (alhtough some are lucky and he gives them a chance through a coin toss). all three parties have several close encounters (with the mexicans coming out on the wrong side a few times), mostly around motels.

in the end, it was a slightly surprising ending, given that we're all used to seeing the hero ride across the sunset, but probably a more believable one too. the actual end of the film came quite abruptly (with the sheriff talking about a dream he had), maybe just because i wasn't expecting the hitman to get away. all in all though, it was a pretty cool film, with some really nice scenery and characters. definitely the best film i've seen this year smiley.
