went and saw into the wild last night at melbourne central (finally worked out how to get their (hoyts) online ticket system to work, this morning though
). it's a film based on a book of the same title, about a guy (christopher mccandless aka alexander supertramp) that had to break away from his family and his sheltered existence to get his freedom. it is based on a true story, of a wealthy college graduate that left his home in washington dc, to go exploring the united states by foot. he loves to read, and was obviously inspired by his books to go and find his calling.
it follows his travels west, north, then south, then north again, finally to alaska. the film moves around between his time in alaska and the other major locations on his journey, south dakota, california, mexico, the grand canyon, etc. he must have been a pretty brave soul, and pretty sharp to be able to do some of the things that were shown in the film.
having not read the book, nor checked out the wikipedia page, i didn't know how it ended. i guess he finds himself at the end, but it kind of soured any dreams i may have had of emancipation from this life of luxury i lead
. it also kinda reminds me of my brother, he left for canada after graduating from uni, and is in europe now, but he isn't living in the wilderness or anything, although he's done plenty of camping in his time i guess. all in all, a pretty good film, and i would recommend it.
