site update

6th-mar-2007 - posted by dtra

ok, well i've been back up for a few weeks now, after that disastrous crash in mid-february. so i thought i'd post a short update on the site's current status. i have started using rdiff-backup to backup my site, which seems to be going quite nicely, one large chunk of a download initially, but incremental downloads after that. all the crons and stuff are running like clockwork smiley. my stats are starting to return to normal (although i'm still getting a massive number of 404's from the old pages), nothing i can realistically do about that.

i've added a couple new feeds to the site in the past couple of weeks, one for comments (meh), and one for the latest photos in the gallery (the ten most recent photos in active galleries). i've also added pictures to the feeds, so news, gallery, and latest photos, all have a thumbnail attached to each item (if it exists), check it out in a feed reader.

i added exif data to the gallery item displays, just the basic stuff, iso, shutter speed, aperture, etc. i'll think about adding the date there as well. it works so far, with my two fuji's (i know of one issue with alf's nikon, but hope that isn't a big deal), hopefully when i get my digital slr (yep, that's right), that stuff will show up fine. i'm not using pel for that, just the standard php exif_read_data and storing in the database. this is due to the ongoing memory issues i am having with pel. i may or may not change this, at the moment i think it's working well. the other thing i'm thinking about is dropping the watermarks off my pictures, but i'm not sure.

i'm actually running a little dry at the moment, i haven't really got an idea as to what to upgrade, or add. if anyone has any ideas, please feel free to let me know smiley. i'm pretty happy at the moment, although, i'd still like to get videos into the gallery (it's proving quite fruitless at the moment). anyways, that's the update, i'm sure something will catch my fancy, and i can start working on a new project for the site real soon. until then, all i can do, is wait, and wait, until i get my new computer (a few weeks away), and then my new camera (which means an holiday as well smiley), and continue to post the usual news, and anything else whacky.

the old dtraCorp logo, might try to find somewhere to squeeze it in smiley.

another catastrophic home pc meltdown later, but fortunately, not too much wasn't recoverable. anyways, the backup is hopefully working properly now, the feeds seem ok, and now i've got linux working better as well. got subversion and learning to use that with the zend framework is cool, i'm using the latest from trunk here right now (with a few global changes to code (frustrating to find)).

just updated the comments feed, hopefully it will now show the last five comments for news and gallery items in added order. unfortunately, i still haven't figured out how to make it just show the last ten comments regardless of category.

just renewed dtraCorp.com for two more years, so all my followers rejoice, that doesn't mean that i will have a server for two years, just a domain name, but all going well, i'll still have a server to host the site on (i can't see myself dumping the site, unless hosting costs skyrocket, and can't be justified).
