dtraCorp - about

Just to get this out of the way, this site is optimised for viewing in firefox, yes, ok, i shouldn't do that, i just can't be bothered checking what it looks like in ie (as i don't use it), or any other browser for that matter, so that's that; saves me having to hack up my css to waste time getting it to look right in a browser that i don't even use, which makes a ton of sense since i'm the primary viewer as well :D.

this site was started out of my interest to learn php and mysql for the purpose of web development. i learnt asp in early 2003, and had heard so much about php, that i decided to give it a try for myself. With asp, i was using an access database as the database of choice (not really since i can't afford to use sql server), i found that there are a lot of limitations to the database, especially in functionality, ease of use, and security.

i bought a book from sitepoint in July 2003, which shows how to use php and mysql to develop a simple database driven web site. i already had a fair handle on this using asp, but i thought as a challenge, and for my future prospects, i should give php a go. it has been a really good learning experience, and hopefully it does provide me a lot more opportunities than i would otherwise get.

the site is supposed to be a personal blog of sorts, it lacks nice functionality such as "track back", "wysiwyg" content management, and user comments (non-member comments anyway), but at least i don't claim to be in beta all the time, like some of the big web sites going around, my site's more like alpha :D.

i finally decided to update this page a bit, it's pretty much been the same for three years. anyway, we' ve come a fair way since those humble beginnings. we've moved on from free shared with php 4.3.x and mysql 4.0.x to paid, dedicated hosting (a couple different hosts), and now onto a vps, so basically running whatever software i want. at the moment, i'm running fc5 (which is, unbelievably heading out of support stage already, it's only been out a year), apache, mysql installed from yum (as well as pretty much everything else), but php, is still compiled the way i like it.
i have all the extensions i want, except for a fully working ffmpeg, but i'll hopefully sort that out some day. anyways, my host had an issue with the hardware that my vps was on sometime around 13 feb 2007, this caused me to lose almost all my data ever. i decided that since it would be too much hassle to retrieve all the data that i had lost, i'd just start again, so the news items started at 1 again, as soon as i got the site back up. all the old stuff (up to late november 2006 anyway), i still have, and maybe one day i will think about make a really, really, long archive html file for them, but i wouldn't hold my breath.

so there you have it, all about dtraCorp up until the end of february 2007. if you are after some of the old stuff, this is the only stuff i was compelled to save. southeast asia 2006, all about my trip to vietnam, cambodia, and thailand in late 2006.
