Salt crust
That's what made the hills so hard to climb, all the salt in the ground made the footing very loose, so it'd just crumble under foot, and you wouldn't get anywhere. It was also sharp and abrasive, I know I came away from this little adventure with a few cuts and scratches (with everything being salty, it's twice the penalty as well), it was well worth it though.
